1. What do they do at BioMarin? At BioMarin, the employees work to study cells and create cures for extremely rare diseases. They perform different experiments to see how to cells divide, grow, and change in relation to different conditions. The scientists also have to purify and analyze the cells, and go through many long and difficult steps in order to actually be able to sell the drug.
2. What are their main goals? The main goal of BioMarin is to maximize shareholder value. They create cures for incredibly rare diseases that only a couple thousand people in the United States have.
3. When did you learn while you where there? When I was there, I learned about the process of protein purificaton, chromatography, chromatography columns, and HPLC (high pressure chromatography columns). Finally, I learned what a spectrophotometer was, and how the scientists use positive and negative cherges to "clean" the cells.
4. What did you like about the visit? I liked that we got to go inside the labs and see all of the different equipment that is used. I also like how they explained the functions of certain parts of the equipment. Finally, i liked how we saw a two scientists doing real experiments.
5. What would you like to know more about? Something I would like to learn more about is how cells function, are formed, and how the scientists figure out when a product is safe enough to test on a human. I would also like to have more backgrounds on cells in general and maybe go again.
